چکیده

The purpose of this research is to examine whether the team diversity and psychological factors (such as, trust and motivation) can influence performance of short-duration, ad-hoc virtual teams engaged in problem solving tasks. We focus on the diversities of the members of virtual teams across national culture, educational specialization, and collaboration technology proficiency. A laboratory experiment was conducted involving virtual teams that were engaged in data model design. The results indicate that educational specialization diversity affects trust and motivation in the virtual teams. We also find that both trust and collaboration technology proficiency diversity influence performance of the virtual teams. The findings of the study highlight the importance of diversity and psychological factors in shaping the performance of shortduration virtual teams.

Group Atmosphere, Shared Understanding, and Team Conflict in Short Duration Virtual Teams

In this study we examine the influence of group atmosphere on perceived team conflict and the development of shared understanding in short duration virtual teams. We conducted a laboratory experiment with 24 short duration virtual teams that were engaged in data model development task. The findings of the study suggest that group atmosphere has strong influence on both development of shared und...

Cultural Diversity, Perceived Work Atmosphere, and Intragroup Conflict in Global Virtual Teams: Findings from a Laboratory Experiment

In this paper we focus on the relationships among cultural diversity, perceived work atmosphere, and intra-group conflict in global virtual teams. We report the findings of a laboratory experiment that was conducted involving the subjects who were geographically dispersed. The participants used IBM's Lotus Sametime to perform a group task. The findings of the study reveal that in virtual teams,...

An architecture for automated group formation within remote laboratories

Group/Team formation has been a well studied field in numerous contexts, (i.e. business teams, project teams, educational teams etc.) but have barely been considered within the scope of remote laboratories. Formation of educational groups in traditional labs/classes often occurs in an ad-hoc fashion where students are assigned to groups mostly without any particular constraints or regard to the...

Group Atmosphere, Shared Understanding, and Perceived Conflict in Virtual Teams: Findings from an Experiment

In this paper, we present a theoretical model on the relationships among group atmosphere, shared understanding, and perceived task conflict in virtual teams. We validate the theoretical model by analyzing data that was collected in a laboratory experiment on virtual teams. We find that cultural diversity of virtual team adversely affects group atmosphere and group atmosphere has a positive inf...

Potential Antecedents to Trust in Ad Hoc Emergency Response Virtual Teams

This research explores the potential determinants of trust in newly formed virtual teams to better inform the choice of communication media for virtual emergency response groups for which interpersonal trust is crucial. Results of a laboratory experiment indicate that the way that communicants view their teammates and themselves as part of that team is significantly correlated with the level of...
